Education: Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine
Dr. Vanessa Hammer grew up in Glen Head, NY and has wanted to be a veterinarian since the age of five. Growing up she had a menagerie of animals including rabbits, turtles, geckos, salamanders, boa constrictors, mice and even a rooster named Freckles. Dr. Hammer attended The Ohio State University, majoring in Animal Sciences. During her college years, she worked at the Ohio State Dairy Farm as a calf feeder, assisting in birthing and newborn calf care. She also volunteered for two summers at the Animal Medical Center in NYC, working with hospitalized patients and with the surgery recovery team. Also during this time, Dr. Hammer studied abroad in Panama researching leaf-cutter ants and howler monkeys.
After college, Dr. Hammer attended Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, an AVMA accredited veterinary school, on the island of St. Kitts in the West Indies. Her years in the Caribbean were spent studying, hiking and traveling. Dr. Hammer then completed her clinical rotations at the University of Illinois School of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 2012. In the years since, Dr. Hammer has worked at a number of practices in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. Dr. Hammer loves practicing general medicine and performing routine surgical procedures. She recently moved to Bayville with her husband and newborn son. Dr. Hammer has three large mixed-breed dogs- Bo, Buddy and Zora.
